They say in Konkani "vet bhor pottak lagon sat somdir pois nokrek voichem
poddta" (we cross seven seas to take up a job for the sake of our tiny
belly). Leaving one's home and family behind in order to take up a job has
always been a painful affair ? a great sacrifice, which only those who
undertook the journey will be able to understand. Many Goans left their
homes in the middle of the last century to take up jobs in East Africa, the
Gulf and on the ships. During the same period, Goans also left for Bomboi
to take up employment there leaving behind their families in Goa. As a
matter of fact, so many Goans left Goa for Bombay that they gradually formed
a mini Goa in Dhobitalao! Very few in those days were fortunate to have
their families with them; most couldn't take their families and there are
still many who cannot.
Every woman's desire is to live in the company of her husband throughout her
life time but this is not always possible. The following song belongs to
Post Liberation period when Goans blended with the rest of India and took up
jobs in various parts of the country. The song deals with a couple who are
yet to celebrate their first wedding anniversary and the wife is expecting a
child, but the husband has to leave for Simla to take up employment there;
if he is to support his family. It?s a touching subject, especially to all
those who have left their families behind in order to take up employment
overseas or in other parts of the country. The song is sung by none other
than the late Alfred Rose, the man with the golden voice, and his charming
wife, Rita Rose. It is one of those yesteryear songs that were very famous
on Akashwanni Ponnje and frequently heard on 'Magnneanchim Ghitam' and
'Kandllam-Onvllam' programs.
