Dr Oscar Rebello, the medico-turned-campaigner is, as we now know, the
man whom some in cyberspace love to hate. Recently, he was declared
Goa Today's "man of the year" in its January 2011 issue.
Goa Today editor Vinayak Naik writes: "Through his markedly
spectacular work over the last few years, the debonair, fortyish and
ever-so-stylish Dr Oscar has, virtually, secured an automatic
selection".
He's talking about the award. But as Goanetters would have noted by
now, campaigning (and badmouthing) in Goa can be a complex process,
involving lobbies, lobbies-within-lobbies, and all kinds of reasons
why certain stands are taken.
A few of comments Oscar made are of interest:
[Initially] in the GBA, all differences were kept aside.
Within the GBA we had people from all kinds of
political hues. It completely was a rainbow
coalition, so to say. You had the right wing people
in, you had the left wing people in, you had the centrists
in, you had the artists, you had the religious heads,
you had just about everybody in....
The problem began post-demolition of the Regional
Plan 2011. In fact, the problem began post-new
government formation....
One part of the strategy was to agitate from
outside, compelling the government to do things,
and th eother strategy was to infiltrate, because
then we would be privy to the information regard-
ing the decisions, and that would help us
influence certain policy decisions.
Remember, we did not go political. We were
handicapped by the fact that we did not have
political support. So, we had to go in there. But
the moment we got in there, the hard core
elements within the GBA started abusing us.
They started slandering us. We kept trying to
plod on regardless. But then we realised that there
was a complete breakdown of trust between us.
They were not trusting us to do the job within the
Task Force. So, I decided to quit as the convenor.
My leadership was not being trusted. The best
way was to step aside.....
In the GBA, I too had my share of faults --
egoism, boorish behaviour, flying off the
handle, but I have a serious problem when friends
and close associates question my integrity.

After saving Goa (and dancing footsie with Digu), the blue-eyed
wunderkind Dr. Oscar Rebelo is now preparing for an attack on
corruption. ?Oooooh, Digu and Co must be quaking in their
Payal chappals.
