Meet the Artiste ? Jessie Dias

Tiatr Academy of Goa?s monthly programme ??Kolakarak Bhett? ? Meet the
Artiste will be held on Monday, 30th April 2012 at 4:45 pm at Conference
Hall of Tiatr Academy of Goa, Block ?A, 2nd Floor, Campal Trade Centre,
Campal, Panjim, . The tiatr artiste of this month is a versatile actress of
yester years namely Maria Conceicao Cardozo e Dias popularly known as Jessie
Dias.
Jessie Dias is the daughter of Jose Manuel Cardozo and Robertina Patrocina.
She was born on May 30, 1946 at J.J. Hospital, Mumbai. She completed her
education at St. Stephen High School, Mumbai.
Jessie?s mother was very fond of tiatr, so were her two brothers. Her elder
brother Bernard, was very friendly with veteran tiatr artiste Anthony
Mendes. Through him, he befriended other Tiatr actors. He often helped them
in stage arrangements and prompting. Jessie?s younger brother Lucas wrote
Konkani plays. Jessie first acted in his play ?Eksuro? when she was just 9
years old.
When Jessie was 10 years old, Francisco de Parra, a good composer and
playwright introduced Jessie in his tiatr ?Lagmoddi Sun? in which even the
veteran artiste Greg acted in a female role. The female who was supposed to
do this role suffered from typhoid and couldn?t make it and Jessie replaced
her.

Her professional career started in the year 1963. When Alfred Rose toured
Goa with his dramas ?Dotor Advogad? and ?Director Saib?, Jessie was taken in
his troupe and she proved her talents as a singer as well as an actress.
So far Jessie has acted in tiatrs of almost more than 90 directors some of
which are Prem Kumar?s ?Kakut Naslolo?, ?Konnank Mhunnom Maim?, ?Mortikar?,
Minguel Rod?s ?Bapul Bhav?, ?Ghorchem Kestanv?, Rico Rod?s ?Paichem
Vhoddponn?, ?Bailek Lagon?, Denis Sequeira?s ?Dogui Mhuje Put?, Alfred Rose?s
?Munis Vo Denvchar?, Robin Vaz?s ?Shantichem Loginn?, C. Alvares?s ?Bhattkar
de Goa?, ?Mhuji Vonnim? etc.
Jessie not only acted in tiatrs but also in various Khell-Tiatrs. Some of
which are Ligorio Fernandes? ?Oromb ani Xevott?, A. M. Pacheco?s ?Fator?,
Anthony San?s ?Darvontto? etc.
Coming to the various honours that have been bestowed on her, Jessie bagged
the Cine Times award for the best actress in Remmie Colaco?s tiatr
?Ghorachem Sukh?. During the centenary celebrations of Tiatr, Kala Mogi
Candolim honoured her on May 20, 1993 at Hanuman Theatre Mapusa and gave her
an award for the contribution that she has made in the field of tiatr. She
was felicitated by the Kuwait Goans for her versatile acting. She is also
the recipient of the most prestigious Goa State Cultural Award.
All tiatr lovers are requested to attend the function.
