Boycott Bomras, Burmese restaurant in
Candolim, Goa

by Rajiv Desai on

Bomras, a Burmese restaurant in
Candolim, Goa is highly regarded for its food.
But the racist northeasterners who run it are thugs. We had booked a table
for
15 for a New Year's dinner for Jan 2. They said they had no booking for us
and
turned us away. There was a table for15 but they gave it away to some
foreigners (all white) even as we stood there arguing. It could have been a
mistake but this is the third time they've done it in the past year. Plus
their
kitchen, where I barged in to talk to the owner chef, deserves to have the
health
department raid it for unhygienic conditions. The Burmese guy who owns it
ought
to be told this isn't his Myanmar
fascist dictatorship. They ruined our family's New Year dinner. Should you
be
in Goa and someone suggests it as a dinner
venue, my advice is: don't patronize the place. This post is my first
effort to
organize a boycott of the place. Watch this space.

I was planning on having dinner there this week with some friends but after reading this email I will boycott the restaurant and ask others to do so.

COMMENT:

1: I agree with Floriano

2: It is my understanding that FEW (if any) restaurants have Valid
certificates of Health Safety and FEWER (? below zero) of the folks
who handle food in these restaurants are medically cleared to handle
food. What is Goa waiting for...a Typhoid Mariamma or Diarrhoeappa?

3: Instead of asking for "Raids" Goans should be demanding that VALID
"Good Hygiene" Certificates are posted in a prominent place in ALL
restaurants and that 'waiters' carry photo ID cards with VALID health
clearances. I know that this opens another avenue for the baksheesh
culture, but that cannot be used as an excuse to condone filth (never
mind what anyone said about Goa 1510 et al).

4: Rajiv stands a good chance of being charged with "Trespass"....esp.
after acknowledging that he "barged" into the kitchen to talk to
whoever. The implied permission given to a patron to enter a
restaurant does not give that patron the right to barge into the
kitchen of that restaurant. Only 'gunda-vokils' can be expected to get
away with it.

I am a great fan of Bomra's cooking and visit it whenever someone else
is paying. I do not know the owner/chef personally.

In all my visits I have never seen any sign of racial discrimination.
And I know. Being exceptionally dark skinned I know places where
racial discrimination occurs. Bomra's is definitely not one of them.
Even though in their dim lighting I can hardly be seen, I have always
received excellent service.

A few months back Prof. Nandakumar Kamat said that Souza Lobo's
restaurant in Calangute ignored him and gave some tables to
foreigners. He made a big noise about racial discrimination in the
press. It turned out that these foreigners had made a booking and he
hadn't. Simple.

I think it is a question of hurt egos.

I suggest someone ask Bomra's for their version of the incident before
boycotting the place. And actually if anybody's ego has been hurt I am
sure Bomra's will be happy to see them boycott. We go to good
restaurants for good food and drinks and service and ambiance. There
are other places for ego massages.

Cheers!

This refers to the comment by the person who hides himself behind his
initials V M.

1 V M risks being labeled "peevish" and "offensive" himself/herself,
trying to sweep my legitimate complaint under his/her rug of prejudice.
V M seems to use the word "Delhi-wallah" the way street urchins might
use profanities. I live in Delhi true but live in Goa as well. My ties
to Goa are deep and abiding and my children are part Goan. I said Bomras
is a Burmese restaurant but its staff is northeastern and behaved in a
racist manner.

2 I did indeed barge into the kitchen after asking to see the chef
several several times. In this unforgivable travesty the staff visited
on me and my extended family, I did want to let him know of the
considerable anguish caused to me and the family. First, they told me he
was busy and could not come out; then they said he was not around;
finally, when I walked in, he had disappeared through some back door. If
indeed, the restaurant was right that I had no booking and I was wrong
to insist on a table, he could have met with me. Such evasive behavior
left no doubt in my mind there was something awry. Also, my reference to
the Burmese junta had to do with the fact that the chef-owner played
hide-and-seek; perhaps you have to be evasive in dealing with a brutal
regime but this is free-wheeling India.

3 To say that Bomras' kitchen is more professional and hygienic than
others in Candolim, Goa is not only a put down of all local competition,
it is testimony to a narrow worldview. My standards are global and
Bomras' kitchen simply does not rise to them.

4 It is not for me assess the contribution of the "young Kachin chef" to
Goa. My submission was simply to express indignation at the third
humiliating experience I had with the restaurant. It is India and one
can express one's opinion. So can V M but his carp should be to the
point. Why bring in extraneous issues?

As for the final assertion that the chef has made a huge contribution to
Goa, I say good for him; now do it without prejudice. As for the
question: "Can anyone make any similar claims about Rajiv Desai?" I
leave it for Goanetters to answer.

Vivek Menezes has failed to mention that he has reviewed this restaurant for
Vogue India. That automatically places his comments to Rajiv Desai's post on
Goanet in the "suspect" column, since we all know the tendency for wining
and dining in these matters for a favorable writeup.

I note the following in his review:
http://www.bomras.com/about.html

The penchant for superlatives like "best Burmese restaurant in the world",
"culinary phenomenon" "sublime" and words in that vein.

Every restaurant has some negatives. The reviewer seems to have ignored
them.

A question for VM:
Did you at any time dine at Bomras on your own coin like Rajiv Desai
intended to do? When it's your own money, it always hurts not to get full
value not only for food but service as well.

Is the discrimination?more to do with race or money? Do hotel staff perceive that foreigners pay bigger tips? I know at least one place where they have two sets of menu-tariff cards:?normal for locals and?higher rates or foreigners.
What is alarming is that Rajiv is experiencing bad service a third time and I would believe a goanetter more than a Northeastern. But we also need to be wiser not to be?taken for a ride?so many times. Anyone booking Bomras can?get the reservation reconfirmed.?Afterall the complainant himself?appreciated the food?and visited several times.
However if the kitchen is not?upto the standards, ensure that Bomras corrects or closes.

Comment:
This has also been my experience at Souza Lobo's where we were not attended
by any waiter for almost half an hour while they only served the foreigners
all around us. It was an indirect message that we leave. We watched very
carefully and purposely stuck on at the tables and refused to budge. They
finally had to attend to us as we were ready to take the struggle against
discrimination further.

to insist on a table, he could have met with me.

First, they told me he
was busy and could not come out; then they said he was not around;
finally, when I walked in, he had disappeared through some back door. If

to Goa are deep and abiding and my children are part Goan.

First, they told me he
was busy and could not come out; then they said he was not around;
finally, when I walked in, he had disappeared through some back door. If
indeed, the restaurant was right that I had no booking and I was wrong
to insist on a table, he could have met with me.

Hi Rajiv,
'Fascist Dictatorship', did you say? Yes you did, and you obviously do not like it.
Wait till you encounter your own Saffron Fascist Dictators coming to power in this Country.
What is your advance opinion on the Indian Fascits,in power?

But the racist northeasterners who run it are thugs. We had

turned us away. There was a table for15 but they gave it
away to some
foreigners (all white) even as we stood there arguing. It
could have been a

their

I was planning on having dinner there this week with some friends but after reading this email I will boycott the restaurant and ask others to do so.

Cheers!

Cecil
