HERPES.

Recently I read it on Heraldo newspaper, on its issue dated 31st Aug.
2003, concerning the above captioned subject an article, By: Charles Ebel,
it wasn?t brief and I was totally confused to know that every human being
carries this disease in his / her immune system without even knowing that
he?s a carrier of it, I really got curious to know what exactly was Herpes
and this is what I?ve come-up with, some of the important details concerning
this disease, which I feel is as deadly as HIV or some what similar to it.

What is Herpes ? Herpes is an infection caused by two different but
closely related viruses, Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and Herpes
simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2). Both are easy to catch, they have similar
symptoms. And both can occur in different parts of the body. When the
infection is on the mouth, it is called oral herpes, when it is on or near
the sex organs, it is called genital herpes?.. Herpes is spread by touching,
kissing, and sexual contact, including vaginal, anal and oral intercourse.
It can be transmitted from one partner to another or from one part of the
body to another. Herpes is most contagious when sores are open and
?weeping? until the scabs heal and fall off. Mucous membranes of the mouth,
vagina, penis, anus and eyes can be infected easily, skin can be infected if
it has cut, chafed, or burns, or even if one has a rash or other sores? It
is possible, but less likely to get herpes from someone who does not have
sores, over the course of one year, the chance of getting genital herpes
from an infected partner who has no symptoms is 10%. It is very unlikely
that herpes is spread by contact with toilet seats, moist towels or similar
objects.

Symptoms for oral herpes are ?Cold sores? or ?fever blisters? which
usually show up on the lips or inside the mouth, they are common in young
children, in brief, a direct kiss is all that?s needed to pass the virus,
cold sores are annoying but harmless in children and adults, but at the same
time cold sores are harmful to a newborn. Oral herpes in adults is usually a
?flare-up? of a childhood infection? Symptoms for genital herpes are 1. ?A
rash, bumps, blisters, cuts or sores in or around the genital area? (vagina,
vulva, anus, cervix, penis or scrotum) 2. Itching, burning, tingling, or
swelling in or around the genital area. 3. Aches or pains in or around the
genital area. 4. Discharge from the penis or vagina. 5. Burning and/or
pain when urinating. 6. Flu like symptoms such as headache, fever, and
swollen glands (lymph nodes) in the groin.

A girl who has been exposed to the genital herpes virus may first
notice itching or pain around her vagina, followed by sores that appear a
few hours to a few days later, the sores which appear on the vagina,
buttocks, and anus start out as red bumps that soon will turn into red
watery blisters. They may make it very painful to urinate, the sores than
open up, ooze fluid or bleed, and then scab over and clear up during the
next 3 to 4 days, the entire genital area may feel very tender or painful,
and a girl may have a fever or swollen lymph nodes in the groin?.. On the
other hand a boy who has been exposed to the genital herpes virus might
first notice pain in his testicles, followed by sores appearing a few hours
to a few days later. The rest of the symptoms are same as the girls.

Most people infected with HSV-2 are not aware of their infection.
However, if signs and symptoms occur during the first episode, they can be
quite pronounced, the first episode usually occurs within two weeks after
the virus is transmitted, and the sores typically heal within two to four
weeks, most individuals with HSV-2 infection may never have sores, or they
may have very mild signs that they don?t even notice or they mistake for
insect bites or a rash?.. Is it serious ? Yes, HSV-2 usually produces only
mild symptoms or signs or no symptoms at all. However, HSV-2 can cause
recurrent painful genital sores in many adults, and HSV-2 infection can be
severe in people with suppressed immune systems. Regardless of severity of
symptoms, genital herpes frequently causes psychological distress in people
who know they are infected?. In addition, HSV-2 can cause potentially fatal
infections in infants
if the mother is shedding virus at the time of delivery, it is important
that women avoid contracting herpes during pregnancy because a first
episode during pregnancy, causes a greater risk of transmission to the new
born. If a women has active genital herpes at delivery, a cesarean delivery
is usually performed, fortunately, infection of an infant from women with
HSV-2 infection is rare.

HSV-2 may play a major role in the heterosexual spread of HIV, the
virus that causes AIDS. Herpes can make people more susceptible to HIV
infection, and it can make HIV-infected individuals more infectious. It is
further confirmed that like other genital diseases that produce lesions,
increases a person?s risk of getting HIV, also prior to better treatments
for AIDS, persons infected with HIV had severe herpes outbreaks, which may
have helped them pass both genital herpes and HIV infections to others. This
is because the HIV virus can enter the body more easily whenever there?s a
break in the skin (such as sore), Also during an outbreak of genital herpes,
CD4 cells, which fight against the herpes infection, are found at the base
of the lesion, these cells are the main cells attached by HIV during
unprotected sexual contact, In addition, if a pregnant woman with genital
herpes has an active infection during childbirth, the newborn baby is at
risk for getting herpes infection. Herpes infection in a newborn can cause
meningitis (an inflammation of the membranes that surround the brain and
spinal cord), seizures, and brain damage.

Here are a few methods to prevent spreading herpes to others:- Don?t
touch the sores, if you do, please wash your hands with soap and water -
this kills the virus. Always wash your hands - after going to the bathroom,
before rubbing your eyes, before touching a contact lens, don?t wet contact
lenses with saliva - specially if you have oral herpes, if you have cold
sore on your mouth, don?t kiss anyone - specially infants, children, or
pregnant women. If you have a genital sore, don?t have sexual intercourse -
even with a condom. Wait until the sore heals, the virus can spread from
sores not covered by the condom, it can also spread in sweat or vaginal
fluids to places the condom doesn?t cover, having sex even with a condom
will irritate the sores, and they will take longer to heal?.

Now a days more people are engaging in oral sex. You may believe that
by having oral sex and not intercourse you are practicing safe sex.
Unfortunately, this is not true, the type 1 herpes virus can be spread
through oral sex, what was a cold sore on your partner?s mouth could develop
as genital herpes in you, its important to use barrier protection during
oral sex?. If you think you may have genital herpes or if have had a partner
who may have genital herpes, you need to see your family doctor, adolescent
doctor or gynecologist for a diagnosis, at present there?s no cure for
genital herpes, but a doctor can always prescribe antiviral medication to
help control recurring HSV-2 and clear up the painful sores, the doctor can
also tell you how to keep the sores clean and dry and suggest other methods
to ease the discomfort when the virus reappears.

Just like me there will be many who don?t even have a clue concerning
this deadly disease, I hope our Health Ministry and Medical Practitioners
back home in India try to educate the innocent ones specially the rural and
uneducated population, in order to avoid spreading such deadly diseases
which are usually transmitted due to ignorance in addition to which so many
lives are lost. Today every where in India so many seminars are held day to
day but only in the big cities, Our Govt. should arrange to hold awareness
seminars concerning contagious diseases to educate mass population not in
the big cities but in remote villages, the best form of educating the
illiterate is visual (motion pictures) and later explain in brief with
picture posters for a better understand. I remember some years back ?The
Family and Child Welfare Centers? along with ?Govt. Health Centers? all over
India had a huge campaign to educate the illiterate and rural population
concerning Birth Control, and they did achieve success, but today these
same centers are warming their seats? With the aid of World Health
Organization in such campaigns India can nurture a healthy nation only if it
wills. At the same time all TV broadcast stations in India can show everyday
short awareness clippings in place of other adds that appear every 5
minuets, but who cares for the poor, our ministers remember the poor and
helpless only when they need a vote not when he is ill, hope at least the
social workers will do something about these awareness campaigns and create
a healthy environment to live in.

Best wishes and best of health to all.

RESPONSE:

Seems to be that if one has a cold sore one should avoid oral sex! Most of

If one has oral sex, I believe it can be transmitted and then it becomes a
problem.

For quick relief of cold sores use 'Zovirax' by Glaxo, works wonders, at the
first sign of a tingle if applied it will stave of the cold sore.

A girl who has been exposed to the genital herpes virus may first
notice itching or pain around her vagina, followed by sores that appear a

Most people infected with HSV-2 are not aware of their infection.
However, if signs and symptoms occur during the first episode, they can be

the virus is transmitted, and the sores typically heal within two to four
weeks, most individuals with HSV-2 infection may never have sores, or they
may have very mild signs that they don?t even notice or they mistake for
insect bites or a rash?..

Symptoms for oral herpes are "Cold sores" or "fever blisters" which
usually show up on the lips or inside the mouth, they are common in young
children, in brief, a direct kiss is all that's needed to pass the virus,
cold sores are annoying but harmless in children and adults, but at the same
time cold sores are harmful to a newborn. Oral herpes in adults is usually a
"flare-up" of a childhood infection. Symptoms for genital herpes are 1. "A
rash, bumps, blisters, cuts or sores in or around the genital area"
(vagina,

vulva, anus, cervix, penis or scrotum) 2. Itching, burning, tingling, or
swelling in or around the genital area. 3. Aches or pains in or around the
genital area. 4. Discharge from the penis or vagina. 5. Burning and/or
pain when urinating. 6. Flu like symptoms such as headache, fever, and
swollen glands (lymph nodes) in the groin.
RESPONSE:

Seems to be that if one has a cold sore one should avoid oral sex! Most of
us have had cold sores which come and go with their discomforting features.
If one has oral sex, I believe it can be transmitted and then it becomes a
problem.

For quick relief of cold sores use 'Zovirax' by Glaxo, works wonders, at the
first sign of a tingle if applied it will stave of the cold sore.

swelling in or around the genital area.

However, if signs and symptoms occur during the first episode, they can be
quite pronounced, the first episode usually occurs within two weeks after
the virus is transmitted, and the sores typically heal within two to four
weeks, most individuals with HSV-2 infection may never have sores, or they

uneducated population, in order to avoid spreading such deadly diseases
which are usually transmitted due to ignorance in addition to which so many
lives are lost.

Seems to be that if one has a cold sore one should avoid oral sex! Most of
us have had cold sores which come and go with their discomforting features.
If one has oral sex, I believe it can be transmitted and then it becomes a
problem.
For quick relief of cold sores use 'Zovirax' by Glaxo, works wonders, at
the
first sign of a tingle if applied it will stave of the cold sore.
cheers,
