GOACOM VIDEO NEWS: Video Clip from Goa on the first Session of HERITAGE
JAZZ YATRA organised by Armando Gonsalves of Trancemedia at Rebelo Mansion
at Betalbatim on October 10, 2004, at http://www.goacom.com/news
Clips_Heritage_Jazz Yatra_1:

ALL EYES ON POINGUINIM: Can the BJP nominee, Isidore Fernandes, make it
three times in a row in a new avatar? Or will the united opposition
candidate, Jagdish Acharya, improve his second position in the 1999 assembly
polls to upstage his rival? Either way, the result is being awaited as a new
landmark for the ruling party and the opposition forces to realign. Hardly
any bye-election in Goa's history has evoked such keen interest as the
Poinguinim contest, which is crucial by the BJP government for its stability
while the Congress is hoping for a win and a turnaround in its political
fortunes. (GT)

.THE CONGRESS' PARTY ISN'T OVER: Mickky Pacheco's Ferrari. Marie Santana's
advise to Isidore to react to his own mother's tears. Churchill Alemao's
"challenge" to Babush Monserrate to try and buy him and fresh doses of
Vitamin M (money), that have reached the Congress. Portions that have gone
onto make a new aggressive Molotov cocktail for the Congress. And it's put
the party on a high. Like a typical late lower order charge, when all hopes
seemed lost, the Congress pulled its men, machines and machinations in place
to pull this by-election out of the bag and make it a fight to remember.
(Sujay Gupta in GT)

PROVEDORIA LOTTERY LOSING ITS CHARM: The century-old Provedoria lottery of
Goa is losing its charm, apparently due to more attractive lotteries being
sold in the State. Provedoria prints about 2 lakh tickets bearing a cost of
Rs.2 per ticket every week.It has 19 agents who are offered a commission of
20 percent on sale of tickets. Cholleti Prabhakar, Director of Institute of
Public Assistance (Provedoria), told Herald that the increase in gambling
activities like "matka" has grabbed market share of Provedoria lottery. (H)

DELIMITATION SPARES SALIGAO CONSTITUENCY: The Delimitation Commission has
retained the Saligao constituency, which was renamed as Guirim constituency
as per the draft working paper. However, the Pale and Loutulim
constituencies have been renamed as Sankhalim and Nuvem constituencies
respectively. With this, there will be now only three new Assembly
segments - Porvorim in Bardez taluka, Vaddem in Mormugao taluka and Davorlim
in Salcete taluka. (GT)

RAZING OF NEW TRAFFIC ISLAND: While one of the arms of the newly-developed
traffic island near the tourism jetty was bulldozed on Sunday midnight
another is being dismantled. The beautification of the traffic island under
the new Mandovi bridge was carried out by Sesa Goa only recently. Just
across the Ourem creek, another projected styled as a marine park, which had
been completed at a cost of approximately Rs.20 lakh, has been damaged in
the course of the ongoing work for the construction of the alternate new
Patto bridge. (GT)

HOUSE BURGLED AT BENAULIM: Unknown culprits committed a burglary into the
house of one Purshottam Vishnu Naik on the intervening night of October 9
and 10 at Mazilvaddo in Benaulim. The culprits stole away valuables and cash
totaling Rs.51,000. (H)

VP'S STALL INSTALLATION RESOLUTION SUSPENDED: The panchayats directorate has
issued an order suspending a resolution passed unanimously by the village
panchayat of Se Old Goa to invite applications for allotment of space for
installation of stalls during the forthcoming exposition of the relics of St
Francis Xavier. (NT)

SARPANCH STAGES DHARNA: The sarpanch of Old Goa village panchayat, Mr
Nilkhant Bhomkar, who resorted to a day-long dharna near the Mahatma Gandhi
statue at Old Goa said his fight for restoration of powers and functions of
the panchayat will continue. (NT)

'GOA WILL NOT ACHIEVE FREEDOM WITH TOURISM': "Goa will not achieve freedom
as long as tourism industry dominates the state's economy," opined Justice
Chandrashekar Shankar Dharmadhikari, former judge of the Bombay High Court
while speaking on the topic "Are we really free", at the convention hall of
Hotel Mandovi on 10 October. The lecture was organised to commemorate the
87th birth anniversary of Pandurang Mulgaonkar which also coincided with the
50 years since the mass satyagraha for obtaining struggle began. (GT)

INCREASE IN US TOURISTS FLOW IN GOA: American Ambassador to India, David
Mulford, gave Goa full marks for security and said that he did not discount
the possibility of increased tourist traffic from his country to the State
in the future. Speaking to the media aboard the US Navy warship "USS
Cowpens", Mulford said, "I think Goa offers a very high degree of security
and I think it offers this diversity of attractions and opportunity." He
said, "I really don't know how much the authorities in Goa have actually
tried to sell the idea to American charter operators but I'm sure if they
make a good sales effort and offer attractive terms there is absolutely no
reason why charter flights wouldn't come here." (Reuven Proenca in GT)

UNPLANNED TOURISM CAUSE FOR FALL IN TURTLE POPULATION: The number of turtle
nesting sites along the coastal regions of Goa has declared since 2000-2001
for which unplanned tourism, beach lighting and destruction of sand dune
vegetation are responsible, according to a study carried out by the Centre
for Environment Education, Porvorim. The Morjim beach showed 30 nets in
2000-01 and in 2003-04 the nests have dropped down to nine. The Galgibaga
and Agonda beaches in Canacona taluka had 35 nests in 2001-02 and in 2003-04
their number has come down to 20.The survival rate of turtles is 1:1000. (H)

the city were shifted yesterday (October 11) to the new Secretariat complex
in Porvorim. Only the offices of Chief Secretary DS Negi and IT Secretary

DESERTED LOOK: The corridors of power in the old Secretariat have turned
gloomy and dusty, barely 48 hours after the seat of state administration
moved to its new glittering premises at Porvorim. The shopkeepers having
their establishments around the city Secretariat building were the ones who
displayed a little depressive mood over the shifting. (NT)

Deepti Sadan Hall, opposite Hotel Majestic, Porvorim, from October 14 to 17

"OSHIANN" RESTAURANT IN BETALBATIM: Oshiann restaurant was recently
inaugurated at the hands of Bertha D'Costa, along with Oshaiann Pay Phone
and Oshiann Caterers. In the evening, Goa's sensation 'Melque' performed at
her best while 'Lea' of Russian fame performed some dance sequences. (H)

UB'S WHISKY FOR GOAN MARKET: The United Breweries Spirits Division launched
Bagpiper Classic Whisky, specially created for the Goan market. Division
Vice-President UPSPD, Dr BK Maitin said, "The Goan consumer drinks more for

The Galgibaga

the city were shifted yesterday (October 11) to the new Secretariat complex
in Porvorim. Only the offices of Chief Secretary DS Negi and IT Secretary
will continue to be located in the city till 16 October, it is learnt. (GT)

(NT)

Deepti Sadan Hall, opposite Hotel Majestic, Porvorim, from October 14 to 17
between 9 am and 5.30 pm. The mission will be preached by Brother Stephen

live on RTP channel from 2.30 pm IST (10 am in Portugal). (H)

Division

GOACOM DAILY NEWS CLIPPINGS
Oct 12, 2004

Only the offices of Chief Secretary DS Negi and IT Secretary
will continue to be located in the city till 16 October, it is learnt. (GT)

(NT)

PRAYER SESSION AT PORVORIM: A 'Healing Mission' will be conducted at Pilar
Deepti Sadan Hall, opposite Hotel Majestic, Porvorim, from October 14 to 17
between 9 am and 5.30 pm. The mission will be preached by Brother Stephen
