RIP PROF. EDUARDO DESOUZA.

Reading from Joel's clippings yesterday, I came to know Prof. Eduardo has
expired. He was the resident of Candolim, near Tinto having big house. He
was my teacher at Escola Primaria de Abade Faria when I was doing my Segundo
Class and later on he shifted to other place. He was very reputed and
dignified person having lot of respects in society since he was coming from
aristocratic family background. Never involved much in the then local
activities but a very firm disciplinarian and students used to shiver his
shadow only. A very good teacher he commanded lot of respects from the
students. His wife was a very benevolent woman giving stitching and cutting
classes for the local girls including to one of my sisters. Suddenly on
fine morning we got news that he was arrested by the Portuguese authority in
Goa for some property disputes and he was immediately sent to Aguada prizon
from where he tried hard to get redressal for his confinement there, he even
wrote to Salazar to intervene on this matter but nothing realised. He was
treated wll by the Augada jail authorities and even allowed to have home
food everyday during his lunch time. It was something unusual that time to
see his wife everyday taking food tiffin to her husband at Aguada.
Two months back in Gulab Magazine he wrote a nice article which showed the
reality of a dream that he would one day rule the Aguada Prizon that is a
prisoner himself would become chief of the Augada jail. Soon after the
Bharati Army took possession of Fort Aguada he and other prisoners including
hard core criminals and freedom fighters were released from the jails. At
about 2.00 p.m. I was at Candolim Tinto. Suddenly I saw a big Millitary
Lorry carrying some Goans who were shouting and singing. When the Lorry
stopped at Candolim Tinto one person jumped from it was Prof. Eduardo who
shouted at the top of his voice saying "JAI HIND - JAI HIN" and embraced
some people there stading whom he knew very well, one of them was Ranga. In
the same month of December 1961 he was appointed as chief co-ordinator of
Augada Jail to look into the affairs of Portuguese Prisoners of War since he
could talk fluent Portuguese. He did his job well and gained goodwill of
the POWs.

Prof. Eduardo had two sons, both were daring and fighters for justice.
After 1961 December things were not going well in Goa. Bharati system
within 24 hours of Goa's annexure undid what the Portuguese system built
during 451 years of Goa's colonisation. To oppose some of the ill deeds of
Bharati system, one of the sons of Prof. Eduardo organised a fast at Panjim
which was to my knowledge was the second in Goa, the first was by Roque
Santan Fernandes against the induction of one Christian MP into the
Parliament by Nehru's Government.

Prof. Eduardo was till a few years back was a regular contributor to one of
the Goan English Dailies and he used to write on historical topics. He had
a vast knowledge of Goan history as well as Portuguese history. His
lectures in the class were listened by the students with perfect attention.
As a teacher he was great and as such I salute him and pray for his soul.
Because of him I learnt a lot. He had special niche in his heart for all
the local students from lower strata of society for whom he did his level
best to improve their educational status. I am very much indebted to him.
He helped my father to get me and my sisters enrolled in the School at an
early age, so too many others. May the Soul of Prof. Eduardo Desouza Rest
in Peace and May Goa produce more of such disciplined Professors.

A. Veronica Fernandes,
Kuwait.

A. Veronica Fernandes,
Kuwait.

A. Veronica Fernandes,
Kuwait.

A. Veronica Fernandes,
Kuwait.

A. Veronica Fernandes,
Kuwait.

A. Veronica Fernandes,
Kuwait.

A. Veronica Fernandes,
Kuwait.
