MANDOVI GETS SHALLOWER: Instances of ferry-boats running aground at low
tide have affected plying of the craft on a few routes along the Mandovi
river. The issue, which has brought to the fore the siltation of the river
has perhaps for the first time led to several incidents of ferry-boats
being grounded during the last few days. (GT)

POWER FAILURE AFFECTS SARS QUARANTINE: Efforts by the Chicalim cottage
hospital to effectively quarantine SARS suspect patients received a minor
setback on Tuesday, when a power failure forced officials to open windows
of the quarantined area. (H)

CHICALIM VP OPPOSES SARS WARD: The village panchayat of Chicalim has
unanimously passed a resolution opposing the government decision to open a
SARS isolation ward at the Chicalim Cottage Hospital. (H)

NORMAL MONSOON: The in-charge of the Meteorological Department, Panaji, Mr
KV Singh has said that if the present trend of monsoon current continues
then Goa would receive the rainfall on normal schedule. Speaking to "The
Navhind Times", Mr Singh informed that the recent cyclone which had passed
the Bay of Bengal, has made the monsoon current arrive at the Andaman and
Nicobar Islands, 4 days in advance. Presently the current is favourable for
monsoon and if this trend continues then Goa should receive first monsoon
showers by June 7, he stated. (NT)

GLOOMY PICTURE OF WATER: The forecast on Goa's water requirement front is
mind-boggling. The State will face acute drinking water scarcity to the
tune of 373 million litres per day by the year 2011. And the estimates of
water shortage for irrigation 8 years hence are more disheartening. By end
of March itself, the long distance rides to fetch drinking water starts in
rural Goa. The report of the Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industries
provides an insight how, in the years to come, the water scarcity would
plague this tiny coastal State. But the report, submitted two years back,
is gathering dust with the State government dragging its feet over finding
a solution. (Rupesh Samant in NT)

ELIGIBILITY FOR PROFESSIONAL COURSES: From the coming academic year, the
eligibility criteria for entrance into Engineering, Pharmacy and
Architecture courses have been modified slightly. While previously the
aggregate of specified compulsory subjects were considered for admission,
of the three subjects considered, only two will be compulsory and third
will be that where the student scores highest. (H)

KAPIL, AISHWARYA PIT IN FOR GOA AT CANNES: Goa could well be the
destination for the ensuing International Film Festival, informed Health
Minister Dr Suresh Amonkar, who is leading the Goan delegation at the
Cannes International Film Festival in France. He said that Goa's changes
for hosting the event was boosted by the presence of bigwigs from the
Indian film industry as well as business community who lobbied for Goa as
the ideal destination. More vociferous in their demand were cricketing
legend Kapil Dev and leading actress Aishwarya Rai, Dr Amonkar added. (GT)

OFF-SITE EMERGENCY PLAN: The off-site emergency plan for South Goa to
tackle chemical and hazardous accidents is one plan, which lay confined to
the papers for want of periodic updation and maintenance. Eight months
after it was adopted by the district administration in September last, the
core group has hardly met nor was any training been imparted to the
responders and other agencies during this period. (H)

SIMIAN RAIDS: A monkey putting in an appearance at lunch hour for a few
days has been posing problems for the staff of the Registrar of
Co-operative Societies, Panaji. According to sources, the simian makes his
entry into the office on the first floor through the open window and flees
with various items. (GT)

NERUL RESIDENT COMMITS SUICIDE: Noel Santan Fernandes (35) of Nerul
reportedly committed suicide at his residence on Tuesday (May 13). Noel is
believed to have doused himself with Kerosene and set himself ablaze,
sometime at about 4 pm. The brother of the deceased informed the police
that her brother was mentally unsound for the past one year. (H)

ONE MEETS WATERY GRAVE: The body of Ranganath Betkekar, 25, of
Guleli-Sattari was found floating in the Raghada river at Guleli on 18 May.
(GT)

LOKAYUKTA AFFAIRS: Terming the Goa Lok Ayukta Bill 2003 as a paler shadow
of Goa Public Men's Corruption (Investigations and Inquiries) Act 1988, a
few experts feel it will be inadequate in its objective of curbing
corruption in public life in its present avatar
Fears are being expressed
that Section 3(2) pertaining to the appointment of Lokayukta or
Upa-Lokayukta is likely to undermine the panel's credibility as it will
pave the way for the installation of a political appointee. (Paul Fernandes
in GT)

DOCUMENTS SIZED FROM PARRA SECY'S HOUSE: A Crime Branch team searched the
residence of suspended Parra panchayat secretary Uday Naik and reportedly
seized some documents related to banking transactions carried out by Naik
and his immediate family. (H)

BETALBATIM CONSUMER FORUM: the Betalbatim Civic and Consumer Forum, which
has been formed by the residents of the Betalbatim village to deal with
consumer problems faced by them, as well as to provide a platform for the
villagers to get actively involved in the gram sabhas of the village
panchayat, has got off to a good start. (GT)

TO CHECKING SPITTING, SMOKING: In order to strictly implement the
provisions of social legislations, specially against spitting and smoking,
the Goa police department has appointed two deputy superintendents of
police as nodal officers for both districts. During the last 10 days, a
total of 428 cases were booked at different police stations against those
found smoking, spitting and urinating in public places, defacement of
public property, sleeping outside the markets. (GT)

JEZUITS RE-ORIENTING EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS: About 100 Jesuit community
members, consisting of principals, headmasters, priests and lay staff
gathered to review, reorient and revitalize their educational institutions
for the new millennium at a three-day Jesuit Educational Association South
Asian Assistancy Triennial seminar at the Pedro Aruppe Institute at
Damon-Raia. (H)

COPS SHIFT ATTENTION: After "strategically" loosening their noose around
matka bookies, the Goa police have shifted their attention to softer
targets, to be specific, roadside defecators, beggars, smokers, spitterd,
etc. (H)

BANASTARIM BRIDGE: Banastarim Bridge on NH-4A will remain closed for all
vehicular traffic on May 25 from 6.30 am to 8.30 am for the purpose of
inspection and recordings of deck levels. (H)

PAINTINGS EXPO: Kala Academy has organise an exhibition of paintings by
Yogendranath Yogi, a renowned artist and chairman of the Uttar Pradesh
Lalit Kala Akademi from 23 to 26 May at the Art Gallery. Altogether 45
paintings will be displayed. Kala Academy has also organised an Artist Camp
from 22 to 26 May at the rehearsal Hall wherein some leading artists from
UP will participate. (GT)

GOAN ARTISTS FOR NATIONAL COMPETITION: Art work of two artists from
MorjimSonu Shetgaokar and Vishwanath Shetgaonkarhas been selected for a
national competition organised by the office of Development Commissioner
(Handicrafts), Ministry of Textiles. The other artists include Shripad
Verlekar, Madhumangesh Nasnolkar and Baby radha Tatnakumari Khandavalli.
Sonu Shetgaokar has prepared "sheshnag" from coconut husk. (NT)

SALGAOCAR SILENCE VASCO: Salgaocar SC prevailed over Vasco SC 3-0 in the
inaugural match of the Second Junior (U-9) football tournament for teams of
the first Division National Football League clubs being played at GFA
grounds, Duler, yesterday. Vasco found themselves two goals down before the
breather through Rajesh Patil in the 34th minute and Lector Caido in the
36th Minute. Lector completed his brace soon after the breather. (GT)

May 21, 2003

(GT)

NORMAL MONSOON: The in-charge of the Meteorological Department, Panaji, Mr

water shortage for irrigation 8 years hence are more disheartening. By end
of March itself, the long distance rides to fetch drinking water starts in
rural Goa. The report of the Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industries
provides an insight how, in the years to come, the water scarcity would

is gathering dust with the State government dragging its feet over finding
a solution. (Rupesh Samant in NT)

Fears are being expressed
that Section 3(2) pertaining to the appointment of Lokayukta or

pave the way for the installation of a political appointee. (Paul Fernandes
in GT)

DOCUMENTS SIZED FROM PARRA SECY'S HOUSE: A Crime Branch team searched the
residence of suspended Parra panchayat secretary Uday Naik and reportedly
seized some documents related to banking transactions carried out by Naik

has been formed by the residents of the Betalbatim village to deal with
consumer problems faced by them, as well as to provide a platform for the
villagers to get actively involved in the gram sabhas of the village
panchayat, has got off to a good start. (GT)

TO CHECKING SPITTING, SMOKING: In order to strictly implement the
provisions of social legislations, specially against spitting and smoking,
the Goa police department has appointed two deputy superintendents of
police as nodal officers for both districts. During the last 10 days, a

etc. (H)
